A beaded headdress, or mpaan, crafted in the Kuba kingdom (present-day Democratic Republic of Congo) during the 19th–20th century, informs the detailing on this artful backpack with Sprayground’s shark mouth integrated into the design. Such a headdress, worn during funerals and ceremonial occasions, would have been a visible indication of one’s rank within the elaborate Kuba social system. The mpaan was specifically reserved for senior female titleholders.
